Measurement of Group I Allergens of Houst Dust Mites in Dusts of Seoul and Monthly Variations of Der f1

Abstract
House dust mites are the most prevalen inhalent allergens in Korean respiratory allergy patients. House dust mites are reactive in about 50% of adult and in more than 70% of childhood patients. The living style of Korea, especially room floor, is
quite
unique. The floor is consisted of ¢¥Ondol¢¥ which is dried and smoothly surfaced. It is warm for heating the house in winter. The purposes of this study were to find which one of group I allergens would be dominant in house dusts of Seoul and to
evaluate
whether there would be any seasonal variation about dominant group I allergen in the house dusts. We had three kinds of groups of house dusts. In the first sample group there were 340 samples of house dusts collected from houses of cooperative
employees
in Severance hospital and of respiratory allergy patients in August and November in 1989. Second group had 680 samples collected monthly from 20 houses: bedclothes, room floors of bedroom and living room and/or sofas and carpets if they had, for
one
year from Feb 1988 to Jan 1989. The last group contained 27 samples from three different sofas and a carpet collected daily for one week on mid August. We measured the amount of group I allergens. Der fI and Der pI, in house dusts by ELISA using
of
monoclonal antibodies of Der fI and Der pI supplied by Professor Chapman in University of Virginia. We could detect group I allergens in 96% of samples in the first sample group. 59% of samples contained both of two grup I allergens. And 35% of
samples
had only Der fI. A few samples(2%) contained Der pI only. The mean value (0.82§¶) of Der fI in one gm of dust was significantly higher than Der pI (0.14§¶). There were no specific differences of the amoung of group I allergens according to styles
of
houses (apartment house vs individual house) and the sources of the houses (patients vs healthy general). The largest amount of Der fI was in the dusts from sofa and the next was from carpet, bedclothes, livingroom and bedroom in decling order.
Der
fI
was the lowest level on May and the highest on August. Der fI levels of bedclothes and room floors during August, September and October were higher than those of April and May. And wed could not note any significant decrement of Der fI with daily
vacuum
cleaning on sofas and carpet for one week.
With above results we could suggest that Dermatophagoides farinae would be the predominant house dust mite in the house dusts from Seoul and that the allergen amount of house dust mite in house dusts showed seasonal variations at lower level on
April-May at higher level on August-October.
